8-year-old philanthropist received 10 News Leadership Award
October 18, 2007 - Rancho Santa Fe Review

Kendra Checketts, 8, recently received the 10 News Leadership Award in Rancho Santa Fe for demonstrating exemplary community service. Presenting the award was a digital correspondent Geni Cavitt, of 10 News, KGTV, ABC affiliate, with family and friends in attendance. The 10 News Leadership Award is given to San Diegans who successfully meet the following criteria: creating solution for a community need; solving a problem by taking initiative and recruiting volunteers; impacting the lives of others who have benefited from services rendered; establishing an on-going commitment to making a difference; inspiring others to participate in projects spearheaded by the recipient; going above-and-beyond normal activities while receiving no monetary compensation for their work and making sacrifices to ensure the success of each project. Only 52 awards are granted annually.

Kendra has been raising funds through special events and donating a portion of her earnings from her professional acting career for the past five years. She has organized and implemented fundraising lemonade stands, hot chocolate, teddy bear and clothing drives to help fulfill the needs of those less fortunate. Through these fundraising projects, she has supported the efforts of non-profit organizations including the Starlight Starbright Children’s Foundation, Casa de Amparo, the San Diego Rescue Mission, and children impacted by Hurricane Katrina.

Foregoing playtime with friends and family, she devotes her free time to painting and decorating the lemonade and hot chocolate stands, visiting local businesses for donations and recruiting friends and school classmates to participate. Kendra selected the theme of “Kids Helping Kids” and serves as a inspiration to other children who demonstrate an interest in getting involved. She wrote and presented a school report informing her classmates how to design a lemonade stand, what products to buy for the stand, and useful tips to ensure measurable results.
